As the Trump administration’s sweeping new tariffs begin to take effect, the Bo
ard of Governors of the Federal Reserve System is scheduled to convene a closed
meeting on Monday at 9.30 pm IST.
The meeting, which comes at a time of heightened economic tension following rece
nt tariff announcements, will take place at the Board’s offices, located at 20t
h Street and C Streets, NW, Washington, DC, and will also be conducted via audio
/video conference call.
Under the procedures outlined in Section 261b.7 of the Board's Rules Regarding P
ublic Observation of Meetings, the session will be closed to the public, focusin
g on matters of official Board business. The final announcement of the topics di
scussed will be posted on the Board's website after the meeting.
On April 2, 2025, President Donald Trump declared "Liberation Day," marking the
signing of an executive order that imposes a blanket tariff on all imports to th
e United States at a minimum rate of 10%. This tariff is set to take effect on A
pril 5, 2025.
Additionally, 57 nations and entities are facing significantly higher tariffs, r
anging from 11% to 50%, with these measures scheduled to commence on April 9, 20
25.
Powell under pressure
Meanwhile, concerns are mounting about the potential of the tariffs to fuel infl
ation and slow economic growth in the US. The Federal Reserve, led by Chair Jero
me Powell, is under increasing pressure to manage the economic fallout from thes
e tariffs, which are expected to significantly disrupt the US economy.
In a statement on Friday, Powell said that the impact of the tariffs on both inf
lation and economic growth is "significantly larger than expected.” However, he
also cautioned that the effects could become "more persistent" depending on how
the global economy adjusts to these new trade barriers.
The timing of Powell’s comments aligns with growing concerns on Wall Street tha
t the Fed may keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4.3% for the foresee
able future, rather than enacting the rate cuts that investors had been hoping f
or.
Since the tariffs were announced, market expectations have shifted dramatically,
with investors now anticipating as many as five interest rate cuts this year.
